The Prince of Wales - Patron
of the National Police Memorial Day
His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales,
has given his support to the National Police
Memorial Day (NPMD) by becoming the patron
of the event.
He
consented to the role in time for the 2006 memorial service which
was held at Belfast’s Waterfront
Hall.
The NPMD aims to honour police officers
throughout the UK who have been killed
or died in the line of duty.
More than 4,000 police officers have given
their lives in public service since policing
began more than 175 years ago. Each memorial
days aims to recognise the courage and
dedication to duty they have shown.
Commenting
on Prince Charle’s role
as patron, Jan Berry, Chair of the NPMD
Organising Committee and Police Federation
of England and Wales, said: “We are
delighted that Prince Charles has become
the patron of this worthwhile and remarkable
event.
“His
support will ensure it achieves the recognition
it deserves and is greatly
appreciated by the families and friends
of fallen officers who gather to remember
their loved ones. They can take comfort
knowing their sacrifice is not forgotten.”
